The jobs nobody wants to price
A pond that has been losing water for three summers. A driveway rutted down past the base rock. Five acres of scrub that has to be gone before a builder can stake a corner. Those are the calls that go unreturned around here, and those are the ones we price.
Part of the reason is the equipment. When the machines belong to the outfit running them, a half day with the mini ex is worth doing, and a week of dozer work does not wait on a rental yard's schedule. Part of it is simpler than that: the phone gets picked up by somebody who can answer the question being asked.
We also keep the whole job under one name. Clearing, grading, drainage, gravel and the concrete on top of it come from the same crew, which means there is nobody to blame if the slab sits on ground that moves. If the base is wrong, it is ours. That tends to make a person careful with compaction.
